Back in the day, Battle Royale games were all the rage. The world of gaming become infatuated with PubG and its step-child Fortnite. Everyone and their grandmother were coming up with new game concepts built around the premise of Last One Standing gameplay. As Nick Cave says, some things we plan we sit and we invent and we plot and cook up; others are works of inspiration. I don’t quite remember whether it was inspiration or indigestion that provided the creative spark for my take on this concept but here it is in all its raw glory for you to judge, Kimble Royale.

Number of Players: 6 to 12

Items

  • Board with 24 spots arranged in a circle
  • Player pieces, one per player — used to represent the player on the board
  • Player inventory cards, one for each player — used to keep a record of the player’s current armor and weapon status
  • Gear items — There are two kinds of gear items, representing weapons and armor
  • A six-sided die.

Goal

  • Be the last one standing, i.e. the only player whose piece is remaining on the board.

Setup

  1. Turn the gear items face down and mix them up.
  2. Select 24 of them and place one on each of the spots on the game board, facing down so that values and icons cannot be seen.

Start

  1. Each player can select a player piece in his favorite color.
  2. Each player can select one spot on the map from which he will start the game.
  3. Each player rolls a die to determine the order of play.
  4. The player that rolled the highest score begins first. In case of a tie, all tied players repeat the roll until one player remains.
  5. Each player can collect the token from the place he had selected.
  6. If the token represents a piece of armor it is placed in the armor slot on the player’s card. If it represents a weapon is placed in the weapon slot on the player’s card.

Gameplay

  1. The first player begins by rolling a die,
  2. The player must move the number of steps indicated by the number he rolled.
  3. The player can choose to move in either a clockwise or a counterclockwise direction.
  4. If a player lands on a spot occupied by another player they fight.
  5. The number on the weapons token of the attacking player is compared to the value on the armor token of the attacked player. The attacking player is the one who had rolled a die. If the value of the weapons token is higher the attacker wins the fight and the other player is kicked out of the game. If not then the attacked player survives and both players remain on the same spot on the board.
  6. After the battle, the attacking player discards his weapons token.
  7. If he has survived the fight the surviving player discards his armor token as well.
  8. Discarded tokens go into the token pile.
  9. The game proceeds in a clockwise direction from the first player awards after he has finished his turn.
  10. The game ends when only one player remains on the board.

Loot drops

  1. If all gear tokens from the board are collected a new loot drop is triggered.
  2. The gear tokens from the token pile are reshuffled.
  3. One token is placed, facing down on each spot on the board that is not occupied by a player piece.
